Kazan State Medical University

Kazan State Medical University is a multi-functional and multileveled state institution of higher learning in medicine. It meets both personal and social needs in acquiring education in medicine, in developing bio-medical and clinical sciences, as well as broadening scientific knowledge of medical science. Kazan State Medical University (KSMU) functions on the basis of self-governance and belongs to the system of higher education and scientific research of the Ministry of Health of Russia. The highest body of KSMU self-governance is Academic Council which works in accordance with university’s regulations.
On March 6, 1994 the university was issued with a license by the State Committee of Russian Federation of Higher Education which grants the right to perform activities in the field of professional education. Under the auspices of KSMU there work a pharmaceutical and two medical colleges in Kazan, one medical college in Mary El Republic, lycee and bio-medical classes on the secondary school basis. This complex educational system in the framework of the university provides the continuous higher education of medicine. KSMU carries on an aimed preparation of experts in different fields of medicine for 10 republics.
University has two major periodical publications which come out since the end of XIX century, they are: “Neurology Newsletter” and “Kazan Medical Journal”. In 1995 the first issue of “Kazan Stomatology Newsletter” was published and in 1996 journal “Novitas” came out. University’s own newspaper “Kazan Practitioner” has been established in 1934.

University is one the academic institutions, among Moscow and St. Petersburg surgical-medical academies, which was one of the founders of higher medical education on the territory of modern Russia. Kazan is the city which was historically formed, on one hand, as a border between the East and the West, on the other hand, as the place where the two met. Kazan became the center of coexisting cultures which bonded over time and benefited one from another. Kazan is situated on the bank of Volga River in the central part of Russia. Kazan - is a big industrial center with the population over 1.1 million people, there is a railway, motor-way and airport junction, as well as the largest river port on the Volga.
Kazan is one of the most acknowledged centers of science, culture and education. There are 14 higher education institutions in Kazan, among them is the well-known Kazan State University, Academy of Science of Tatarstan and the of Scientific Center of the Academy of Science of Russia; 7 professional theaters; philharmony; symphonic orchestra; museums and libraries. Kazan is connected with the names of famous thinkers, writers and scientists, such as L.N. Tolstoy, A.M. Gorky, G. Tukai, N.I. Lobachevsky, A.M. Butlerov, F.I. Shalyapin and many others. Clinical investigations

The basic branches of the departments of pediatric faculty are the investigations of the age peculiarities of pathology and normal state of child. They work out the problems of adaptive possibilities of children, immunological reactivity in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, diagnosis and endotoxicosis treatment in childhood and micro ecology of child.
The departments of therapy perform scientific research work in the fields of prophylactics and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The priority trends are the investigations of the pathogenesis membrane mechanisms of hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infraction and rheumatoid arthritis.
Surgical departments are the leaders of Russian medicine in the field of laser surgery and endosurgery.
Regional center of cardiovascular surgery is formed in one of the departments of the university.
The faculty of prophylactic medicine deals with the problems of ecology, environmental pollution in oil-fields. They created the program of training doctor-ecologist for all medical institutions of Russia.
The dental school of the university is well-known for developing new constructions of dentures, implants, orthopedic materials with forms ‘memory.’

Clinical training is performed at 54 units of the Ministry of Public Health of Russian Federation. There are 33 general hospitals, outpatients departments, 21 policlinics, maternity houses, dental polyclinics, etc. The total number of beds is 8600. There are 4315 therapeutic, 2120 - pediatric, 1210 - surgical and 440 - gynecological beds.

Clinical Units

Clinical training of the medical pediatric and dental faculties’ students is provided in 54 medical institutions. There are hospitals, maternity houses, special diagnostic centers, out-patients units and 20 polyclinics including dental and children’s. Clinical units have 8600 beds. University dental polyclinic has 98 dental chairs. Republican and 8 city centers of sanitation and epidemiological control with the specialized departments and laboratories are used for teaching the students of prophylactic medicine faculty.
Pharmaceutical faculty uses for training its students 65 pharmacies with the laboratories in State, 18 pharmacies in Chyvachia and some commercial pharmaceutical units.

  • Apart from the special subjects, the program includes the study of interdisciplinary subjects, electives, the choice of which depends on the main specialization. After finishing the course the students have to take qualification examination. The certificate is granted in accordance with satisfactory results and it gives the right to start medical practice.
The advanced training of doctors is based on the four courses: doctors of general practice (family medicine), pediatric surgery, pharmacy, medical ecology and sanitary-epidemiological control. The training is performed in cycles of thematic advanced education, general training and specialization which lasts from one week to three months.
The advanced training of the teachers of medical colleges of Russia has been performed during 30 years. The university is the base for the activities of the Co-ordination Council of the joint work with the medical, pharmaceutical colleges.

Scientific Research

Academic research work of the university covers a wide range of areas in clinical elaboration on the problems of physiology and pathology of the cardiovascular system, diagnostics and treatment of malignant neoplasm, age peculiarities of child’s organism in the normal state and pathological, solving of the modern problems of dental diseases, problems in diagnostics and prophylactic of infectious diseases, development of the scientific care of women’s illnesses, mothers, fetus and newborn, hygiene of labor, and the basics of pharmacy. Traditionally the most strongly developed scientific areas are the university are the fundamental developments. The scientific groups of neurophysiological laboratories of the departments of physiology, medical physics and histology work on the highest European level. During the last year we’ve got priority data of mechanism of release of the mediator in the neuromuscular synapse, its interaction with postsynaptic membrane, peculiarities of neuron structure and functioning. The department of biochemistry, headed by academician D. Zubairov created and proved the theory of continued blood coagulation and worked out technology of getting human blood preparations for clinical tests. This work was recognized by the State premium of Russian Federation. The premium and diploma was given by the Academy of Science to recognize the program “Blood circulation in the brain”, the university also received State premiums in the areas of science and technology for physiology and pharmacology, 5 premiums VDNH, medals from Check Academy of Science named after I. Gavki and Y. Purkinie for the achievements in biophysics, premiums from the European and Russian linguistic competitions for introducing the theory of the convergent development of languages of the euro-american area, as well as the encouragement premium from the Fund of Soros.
The department of pharmacology with chemical laboratories elaborated and approbated medicine from phosphororganic compounds. Now they are investigating pharmacological characteristics of some antiblastomic preparations.
During the last years university has developed and introduced into the clinical practice the following preparations “Ksimedon”, “Fibronektin”, “Fosphobenzid”, “Glizifon”, “Mefopran”, “Tetramezin”, ‘Bacterial ribonucleasa”.

Members of the staff participate in the development of six international programs. For the last five years more than 200 reports were presented at the international conferences, symposiums and conferences (France, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Czeck Republic, England etc.

Kursk State Medical University

Kursk State Medical University was established in 1935. The past years have been ones of improving the teaching process organization, developing the scientific potential and practical health care, reinforcing the material and technical base. In 1994 the higher institution obtained the status of a university. In 2004 by the decision of the independent public council “European quality” KSMU is listed in the top 100 universities in Russia. To-day the university comprises: a library with a fund of more than 500 thousand copies, Research Institute of Ecological Medicine, a consulting diagnostic policlinic, medical institute, four teaching buildings, five comfortable student hostels, three sport halls, a shooting gallery, a canteen, a café and buffets in the teaching buildings and hostels. The university concluded agreements on cooperation with the leading medical institutions of the Ukraine, Byelorussia, and Kazakhstan. KSMU was the first among the medical higher institutions to start training in English that resulted in a possibility to train more than a thousand students from 34 countries worldwide.
On the base of the university there are 12 scientific schools, numerous scientific laboratories, 5 councils for defending Ph.D. and D.Sc. theses, Central – Black Earth Centre of RAMS. The university scientists have won recognition both in Russia and throughout the world. Our scientists are the authors of two scientific discoveries. Research and practical herald “Human Health” was included in 2007 into the list of publications of the Ph.D. theses investigation results on the recommendation of the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles. Extra-curricular activities involve numerous Centers: of culture and leisure; psychological and social support to students; diagnostics of social health of a student family. Annually the administration of the university holds meetings with all categories of students, residents and post-graduate students. Medical Faculty

Kursk State Medical University was founded in 1935. During the years of its existence the University has become one of the prestigious higher medical institutions in Russia.
Training of foreign citizens on a contract basis began in December 1991. Training of foreign citizens in Russian medium at the medical faculty began in September 1991. In September 1992 the pharmaceutical faculty was opened. Residency, post-graduate education and internship were opened in 1992. In 1994 Kursk State Medical University was the first among the higher medical establishments in Russia to start teaching foreign citizens in English medium.
The training of foreign students is provided in the following trends: pre-diploma education, diploma education and post-diploma education. Student Scientific Union of KSMU

Nowadays, the student scientific union of the KSMU is the union of more than 1500 people interested in getting the skills of scientific work and practice and the development of science in this country.
Nowadays, hundreds of students of KSMU work in the spheres of science and innovation. The development of student science and the realization of students in the sphere of innovation are the priorities of the work in KSMU.
Naturally, it is not easy to coordinate the work of such an amount of people. This task is imposed on the Board of the SSU of KSMU, with Professor V.A. Korolev at the head.
The Chairman of the Union is the four-year student of the Faculty of Medicine Shevchenko N. At the present time there are 13 students in the Union, with their definite duties, among which cooperation with departments and Deans’ offices of the university, public relations, coordination of subject competitions and award of the winners.
The student scientific union of KSMU cooperates with the unions of other universities of the Russian Federation and the neighbour states for experience exchange and holding joint scientific conferences and fora.
The SSU of KSMU interacts with the young scientists union. So, 'School of Young Scientists’, joint conferences and shows are the results of this interaction.
For 75 years the Annual final inter-university scientific conference of students and young scientists has been held. The aims of this event are the following: to figure out the total of scientific work of the university, the realization of projects and to award the winners of different competitions.
So, the SSU is not only the student council, but the team of people aimed at support for future scientists and providing appropriate conditions for their realization in the research sphere.

SMU Centre of Culture and Recreation

For young people studies time at a higher institution is a period for harmonization of personality and social interests, formation of social, creative activity.
The most important way of providing such an integral cultural and creative development of a young man personality is a process of moral and aesthetic education of students.
To realize this process, faculties of public professions (FPP) were opened in the 60’s.
In November 1993 T.I. Gapontseva headed this faculty, the latter was reorganized into the faculty of additional education in 1994.
The basic trends of the faculty were as follows:
  • Additional professional education of students at the department of additional professions.
  • Moral and aesthetic education and up-brining of students at the art department.
  • Organizing leisure of students.
In 2005 the faculty of additional education was reorganized into the Centre of culture and recreation.
Short-term courses in different programmes were available at the department of additional professions: “Classical massage”, “Biologically active points. Point massage”, “Computer knowledge”, “English”, “German”, “Sanitary and chemical analysis of food stuff”, “Psychological support by telephone”, etc. The coursers were popular not only with the students but also with the university staff, as the offered an opportunity to widen knowledge in one of the trends of the basic educational activity, to acquire additional skills. The graduates of this faculty work in different medical institutions, social safety services, information technology centre, display rooms, etc.


Nowadays, the library is one of the leading structural units of the university, providing the educational process and research work with all the necessary literature and information. It is the centre of advancement of knowledge, spiritual and intellectual intercourse and culture.
With fast development of university education, opening of new faculties and specialties the library has active work on forming the fund and its safety, perfection of service and the system of informational support based on computerization.
The fund of the library is a rich collection of scientific, educational, foreign literature. It has approximately 500 000 copies. The library gets more than 30000 copies per year. The unique collection of rare books in Medicine of the XVIII-XX centuries is the pride of the library.
The teaching staff, post-graduates, students and practical physicians are library readers (the average amount of them is 9 000 people per year including 6 000 students).
Traditionally, the library uses different forms of showing its book collection: book shows, the browsing of literature. A lot of events connected with student acculturation are held in the library (reader’s conferences, literature meetings are among them).
The library is the huge information repertory with card and electronic catalogues. Since 1990 the library has had its subject catalogue on Mesh system of the National medical library of the USA.
The modern stage of development of the library is characterized by some changes of the main priorities of its work with some new aims. Together with keeping book collections, the function of the information centre, with good data bank, is added. The interlibrary technologies and forms of work with readers are changed.
It is hard to imagine the library work without computer technologies. Nowadays modern personal computers, printers and scanners are used. All the main library processes are automated. The local library net has been formed.
In 2004 the electronic library, a special information system for saving and using documents of different types in the electronic form, was opened. It is allowed for the readers to access bibliographic data banks and some other information products in the electronic form.
In the structure of the library there is a bookstall for the needs of students and teachers in literature. The bookstall organizes the realization of fringe collections and idle literature from the library, materials published by the departments of the university, stationary staff.

Tver State Medical Academy

For more than 100 years Tver State Medical Academy has been playing a leading role in the development of medical science and training of medical practitioners and scientists. It is always among the top 10 Medical Educational Establishments according to the annual official rating of the 48 Russian Medical Educational Establishments. Today it is the largest medical scientific, research and educational centre, noted for its extensive clinical and laboratory base and a brilliant teaching staff. During the whole period of its history the main goal of the Academy has been training specialists of a high qualification, having fundamental theoretical knowledge, practical skills in their specialties. Library & Research:

The Library of the Academy was founded in 1936. It contains over 440 thousand copies of Russia and foreign books.
In addition to this TSMA also maintains another library with approx. 2000 books in English Medium written by Indian and foreign writers. These books are the same which the Indian students read in the local Indian Medical Colleges.
Scientific research programmes are carried out at all Departments of the academy. The research programmes conducted at the academy have participated in six exhibitions conducted in relation to the National Economic Achievements, three of which were national. The Academy has been awarded four silver and two bronze medals. A gold medal was awarded for a combined research carried out by the Academy and the Tver State Technical University.


There are four hostels which can accommodate 1840 students. Two of them are flat type i.e. with attached bathroom, toilet and kitchen. The hostels are centrally heated (air-conditioned). Hostels are fully furnished. The basic system is two or three students in one room. Students are provided with full beddings.
Separate arrangements for boys and girls. Every hostel has internet facilities (wi-fi and broadband). Students can get Indian food at the canteen of the hostel and foreign TV channels (Hindi, Tamil etc.) are also available. All the hostels are well guarded with police security. Bed linen is changed once in a week and hostel is cleaned once every day.

Student Life:

While the primary object of entering the Academy is to get a perfect education and training, time spent in the TSMA can provide priceless life experience. It can tremendously widen person`s mental horizon and glimpse of life, giving him essential superiority over his peers. It is important to mention that apart from academic studies in the TSMA attention is also paid to social and extracurricular activities.

Nizhny Novgorod State Medical University

Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy is a major center for training medical practitioners in one of the largest regions of the European part of Russia.
The medical faculty was opened in 1920 as a faculty of Nizhny Novgorod University. In May, 1930 it became an independent Medical Institute and in June 1994 it got a status of the State Medical Academy.
In 1992 the Faculty of Overseas Admissions was opened in NNSMA. Since 1998/99 academic year the Academy has started training international students in the English Medium.
More than 600 international students from 38 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America (Sri-Lanka, Malaysia, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Syria and others) are being trained in Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The total number of students is 2500.

FACULTY OF GENERAL MEDICINE:is the biggest one. About half of all the students of the Academy specialize in Surgery, Therapy, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Neurology etc. The training course lasts for 6 years. PEDIATRIC FACULTY:physicians are taught here to treat children. The Regional Pediatric Hospital and the Institute for Pediatric Research have been selected as teaching hospitals. Duration of the course is 6 years. FACULTY OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE:specialists are trained here to implement the main prophylactic principles of public health to prevent diseases. Graduates from the Faculty are qualified as Hygienists and Epidemiologists. Duration of the course is 6 years. FACULTY OF DENTISTRY:specialists in Dentistry are trained here. After the basic course graduate students ought to have special primary internship training in the following branches: Dental Therapy, Dental Surgery, Dental Orthopedics, and Pediatric Dentistry. Duration of training is 5 years. PHARMACY FACULTY:prepares pharmacists. Duration of the course is 5 years.

Northern State Medical University

NSMU was established in 1932 for training medical personnel in the European North of Russia. It currently hosts about 9000 students from 17 countries in 16 faculties and institutes and has a staff of 980, 394 of which are academics – including 80 professors, 250 PhD.
University buildings are provided with up-to-date equipment: computers, films, video aids, and other modern appliances. Training at the modern center of pre-clinical center presented by a plenty of state-of-the-art medical mannequins and equipment is a part and partial of educational program. At all there are 55 departments, 27 of them are clinical ones and situated at the best hospitals of the city. Well equipped clinical base allow training highly qualified specialists of different profiles according to modern requirements of the health care systems. Today NSMU is the main medical training center for six regions of Northern Russia.
More than 100 graduates of NSMU are working abroad (USA, UK, Canada, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, and Denmark etc.).

Novosibirsk State Medical University

Novosibirsk State University was founded in May 1959 in the USSR by Soviet academicians Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrentiev, Sergei Lvovich Sobolev and Sergey Alekseyevich Khristianovich in a program of establishing a Siberian Division of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Novosibirsk State University is one of the most famous universities in Russia, although is somewhat young. The university is located 20 kilometers from the city of Novosibirsk, a cultural and industrial center of Siberia. The total number of students in the year 1999 was 5200.
Three fellow members of the USSR Academy of Sciences Lavrentiev, Sobolev, and Khristianovich, decided to bring international level research over the Urals from Moscow to the vast territories of Siberia. Siberia possessed copious natural resources, but lacked large research institutions which would promote economic development and growth in the region. The idea was implemented with the establishment of the Siberian Division of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1958 near the large industrial city of Novosibirsk. A new academic town (Akademgorodok) started to grow rapidly and half a year later a new university was founded to train young researchers for the newly born science center.
NSU new building: Thus, in May 1959 the USSR Higher Education Ministry issued a decree to begin studies in Novosibirsk State University on September 1, 1959 with Ilia N. Vekua as rector (Russian for president or chancellor of a university). The July 20, 1959 issue of the newspaper Pravda reported the opening of the new university and announced admittance with entrance examinations for future students from all over the USSR in the period of August 1 through 20. 139 first-year students were admitted as full-time students and 119 as part-time students. In addition, the best students from other Soviet universities were selected as second-year students. The applicants for chemistry and physics accounted for eight and five persons per vacancy respectively, with three persons for mathematics, mechanics and geology.
The official opening of the University took place on September 26, 1959 at the Concert Hall of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Novosibirsk. First lectures were held in the building of a secondary school, and first dormitories for the students were just tents amidst the forest; but the spirit of novelty and the lust for education and research created a strong motivation among the first students.
At first, the only department of the University, the Department of Natural Sciences, combined Mathematics, Physics, Mechanics, Biology, Chemistry and Geology. Between 1960 and 1967 new departments began to separate into their own disciplines. In December 1963 the first graduates of the Novosibirsk State University, including 26 physicists, 24 mathematicians and ten researchers in mechanics, received diplomas.

The Novosibirsk State University is a coeval and a creation of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The "Founding Fathers of Siberian Science" believed that it was impossible to organize a scientific center without solving the problem of training young researchers. On the other hand, almost 80% of the Siberian Division staff consists of NSU graduates. Some journalists still argue whether the Siberian Division gave birth to the University or the University built up the Siberian Division.
In the USSR and subsequently in Russia, universities serve primarily as educational institutions, in which faculty members rarely do research and focus on training students. Research and graduate training exist in separate research institutions. The main idea of the founders of NSU was to combine research and education in the University by inviting scientists from the nearby research institutions in Akademgorodok as part-time university faculty. This allowed students to gain laboratory experience in addition to regular coursework. Additionally, it allowed students to undertake the writing of theses.
This idea propelled NSU toward becoming arguably one of the best Russian universities. However, this design also led to a number of disadvantages. In official ratings of Russian universities NSU is not near the top. This may be attributed to the fact that the ratings do not consider part-time staff and only account for volumes of the university library, while NSU students also have access to a number of institute libraries as well as the large Academy of Sciences Library which is located across the street from the main University building. Another disadvantage is that NSU trains researchers mainly for the Academy of Sciences; therefore, non-science majors are underrepresented in the University. To attempt to correct this imbalance, Law, Medicine, Foreign Languages, and a few other departments were added recently. However, in conditions of post-perestroika financial crisis in Russian higher education, this innovation has received a great deal of criticism. Critics say that new departments drain money from the science departments from which NSU draws its reputation.

Founded in 1972, Mari State University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the city of Yoshkar Ola, the capital of Mari El Republic.
